What a Difference A Day Makes
By Roni Bell Sylvester
Brother Stuart and I were chatting about "life on the farm 60 years ago."
Though, like Stuart said, "It was damn hard to go to school, try to play football, maybe date a little and do the (farm) work," we didn't know any other way of life.
And if you sat down to rest a second, Mom would say, "You better have a book in your hands!"
We were raised to "do something constructive" every moment.
Sure. Time shouldn't be wasted on Snowflakes, but damn't all, I can't help but do some comparisons.
Sixteen year old Stuart pitched hay from the wagon into the loft; 20 year old Snowflakes lay on the ground wail and scream because a 78 year old Stuart voted for a man named Donald J. Trump.
Thirteen year old Ronita milked 40+ cows every morning and night; 26 year old Snowflakes spit and whine because a 72 year old Ronita doesn't want to pay for their abortions.
Stuart's friends owned their own excavator and construction businesses by time they were 21; Snowflakes bitch because the 78 year olds can't hire them, because they don't even know what a hammer is.
Seventeen year old Ronita, moved away from home, rented a bedroom in Omaha, walked and took buses to and from her secretarial job; 25 year old Snowflakes cry because 72 year old Ronita doesn't want to give them money to put condoms on cucumbers...the only skill they have.
Roofing, plumbing, drywalling, concreting etc. 30 year old Stuart worked alongside and called "friend," individuals of all colors and gender; 30 year old Snowflakes call the 78 year old Stuart, "racist, homophobic, misogynist."
Thirty year old Ronita made coleslaw and fried chicken in the basement of Zion Baptist Church, worked alongside and called "friend," individuals of all colors, political parties and gender; 30 year old Snowflakes call the 72 year old Ronita, "racist, homophobic, right wing conservative repuck bitch."
In spite of the differences a day makes, I still believe that people are born innocent...good...loving.
And with that, I'll stop...
Happy New Year.
